UAV Forecast Alternative 2026: Great Weather, Half a Preflight

UAV Forecast has been around since 2015 and has earned its place. If your question is "what will the weather do where I want to fly," it is one of the best answers on the market, and arguably deeper on raw weather data than anything else built for drone pilots.

But "is the weather good?" and "is this flight legal and safe under Part 107, right here, right now?" are different questions. They overlap, but they are not the same. A pilot who treats a green weather verdict as a complete preflight is answering one third of what the rule requires.


What UAV Forecast Does Well

Credit where it is due. As a weather instrument, UAV Forecast is hard to beat.

Winds aloft at altitude. It shows wind and gust speeds not just at the surface but at the altitudes you actually fly. For higher or longer missions, that altitude resolution is genuinely useful, and it is more than most drone tools provide.

The full atmospheric picture. GPS satellite counts including Galileo and GLONASS, the Kp solar-activity index, cloud and visibility data, and hourly forecasts out several days. The display is a clean, color-coded "Good To Fly / Not Good To Fly" grid.

Fully configurable thresholds. You set your own wind, temperature, and other limits, and the app scores each hour against them. A pilot who knows their airframe's limits can tune it precisely.

A long track record. A decade-plus in the App Store and roughly two million downloads is real trust. The forecast quality is the reason.

If raw weather depth is what you are after, this is a serious tool, and on a few axes (winds aloft, forecast range) it goes deeper than UAS SkyCheck does.


Where It Stops Short for a Part 107 Preflight

The gaps are not weather gaps. They are everything around the weather.

The verdict is measured against your thresholds, not the regulation. UAV Forecast tells you whether conditions match the limits you typed in. It does not tell you whether you meet the weather minimums in 14 CFR 107.51, and it does not connect those conditions to the rest of a legal flight.

Airspace is a separate map, not an answer. There is a no-fly-zone map, but it sits apart from the weather grid. There is no integrated "you are in controlled airspace, LAANC is available here, the UAS Facility Map ceiling is X" verdict. You are left to cross-reference airspace yourself.

No Part 107 compliance layer. No state and local law (the layer that quietly grounds more commercial flights than weather ever does), no preflight checklist tied to the rule, no Remote ID or registration prompts, no flight log or shareable documentation for a client or an insurer.

It is two answers, not one. A weather grid in one place and a zone map in another means you are still doing the integration in your head, under time pressure, in the field. That is exactly the moment a single clear verdict matters most.

Access. Real-time hyperlocal forecasts now sit behind a subscription (the no-fly-zone map remains free), and it is a native iOS and Android app with no web option. Neither is a flaw, but both are worth knowing before you commit.


Weather Is Necessary, Not Sufficient

Weather minimums are one leg of a legal Part 107 flight. Under 14 CFR 107.51 you need at least 3 statute miles of visibility and specific cloud clearances, you stay at or below 400 ft AGL, and under 14 CFR 107.29 you fly in daylight or civil twilight with proper lighting. UAV Forecast helps with that leg.

But a green weather hour over restricted airspace is still a no-go. So is a perfect-weather flight inside an active TFR, or one your city ordinance prohibits, or one at an altitude that needs an authorization you have not requested. The other two legs, airspace authorization and the local legal picture, decide just as many flights, and weather data says nothing about them.

If you fly mostly in familiar uncontrolled airspace, already have your airspace and legal picture handled, and you want the deepest weather model available (especially winds aloft for higher or longer operations), UAV Forecast is an excellent dedicated weather instrument and the subscription is reasonable for what it is.

For a pilot who wants the whole preflight question answered in one place, weather plus airspace plus the legal layer, it is one piece of a larger workflow.
