Most pilots think about the flight log only after something goes wrong: an FAA inquiry, an insurance claim, a neighbor complaint, a question about whether a flight was legal. By then the details that matter, the exact conditions, the airspace, whether a TFR was active, are gone. Memory fills the gaps, and memory is not evidence.
A good flight log solves that. It captures what you knew when you decided to fly, at the moment you decided, so the record is true when you need it most. This guide covers what to log, why it protects you, and how to capture an accurate record without slowing down your flight.
Why log drone flights at all
There are two honest reasons, and neither is "because it feels responsible."
1. Currency and proficiency. Recreational and Part 107 pilots both benefit from a record of where and how often they fly. It is how you demonstrate experience, track proficiency in specific conditions, and build the habit patterns that keep you safe. If you ever move toward commercial work, a real flight history is an asset.

2. Evidence. This is the one people underestimate. If an incident happens, or someone alleges one, the questions are specific: What was the airspace? Was there an active TFR? What were the wind and visibility? Did you have authorization? A contemporaneous log that recorded those facts at the time is worth far more than a reconstruction written after the fact. Insurers, and the FAA, treat a timestamped record very differently from a memory.
The FAA does not mandate a specific logbook format for most operations, but that is not a reason to skip it. It is a reason to keep one that actually helps you.
What belongs in a flight log
A record is only as useful as the facts it captures. At minimum:
- Date, time, and location of the flight
- Airspace class and whether authorization (LAANC or manual) was required and obtained
- Active TFRs or NOTAMs at the time, or confirmation there were none
- Weather at flight time: wind, gusts, visibility, temperature, and whether the data was live or estimated
- The aircraft flown and its registration (weight class changes the rules that applied)
- Your role (pilot in command, visual observer) and the purpose of the flight
- Duration and outcome (completed, aborted, or any incident)
Notice that most of these are conditions you already check before flying. That is the key insight behind logging efficiently: the preflight check and the flight log are the same facts, captured once.

The trap: logging later
The common failure is not skipping the log entirely. It is telling yourself you will fill it in later. Later, the conditions have changed, the details are fuzzy, and you are reconstructing from memory. A reconstructed record has real gaps: you cannot recover the exact wind at 2:47 PM, and you certainly cannot recover whether a TFR was active three hours ago.
Reconstruction is not worthless, but it is lossy, and an honest log should never present a guess as a fact. The fix is to capture the truth at the moment of the flight, automatically, so there is nothing to remember later.
How to log a flight in one tap
