Can I Fly My Drone Here? How to Check Before Every Flight

The most common question new drone pilots ask is also the most important one: can I fly here?

The answer depends on factors that are invisible to the naked eye. Airspace class, active temporary flight restrictions, restricted zones, LAANC authorization requirements -- none of these have physical signs. You cannot tell by looking at a location whether it is legal to fly there.

Here is how to check, correctly, before every flight.


Why "I Looked It Up on a Map" Is Not Enough

Many pilots use the map in the FAA's B4UFLY service (delivered through approved apps) or Google Maps satellite view to eyeball whether a location looks clear. This is not a preflight check. It misses:

Active TFRs. Temporary flight restrictions activate and expire constantly -- for sporting events, VIP movements, firefighting operations, emergency airspace, and other events that do not appear on any permanent map. A stadium that was clear last week may be inside a game-day TFR today.

Restricted zones not visible on consumer maps. Hospital helipads, power plants, military facilities, and specific regional park restrictions are not marked on Google Maps. They exist as polygon boundaries in FAA datasets that most consumer apps don't show.

LAANC authorization requirements. Being inside controlled airspace (Class B, C, D, or surface E) means you need authorization to fly -- even if you cannot see an airport and even if the airspace looks empty above you.

Local ordinances. State parks, city facilities, and municipal properties often have no-drone rules that are land-use restrictions, not airspace rules, so they don't appear in FAA data at all.


The Correct Preflight Check: Five Questions

Before every flight, you need answers to five questions.

1. What airspace class is this location in?

Airspace class determines whether you need authorization to fly, what altitude limits apply, and which rules govern your operation. Class G is uncontrolled -- you can fly without authorization up to 400 ft AGL under standard Part 107 rules. Class B, C, D, and surface Class E require either LAANC authorization or a manual FAA DroneZone waiver.

2. Are there any active TFRs?

TFRs are the most time-sensitive element of any preflight. They can activate with as little as one hour's notice for Presidential movements, law enforcement operations, or airspace management. Always check TFRs the day of the flight, not the day before.

3. Are there any restricted zones at this location?

Restricted zones include national parks (NPS prohibits drone takeoff/landing), stadiums (14 CFR 91.145 prohibits all UAS), hospital helipads (protected airspace around active medical operations), military facilities, tribal lands, wildlife refuges, and more. These zones exist regardless of airspace class.

4. Is LAANC authorization available and have I obtained it?

If you are in controlled airspace, check whether LAANC is available at your specific coordinates and what the authorized altitude ceiling is at your exact location (not just the outer boundary of the airport's Class D ring). Get authorization through any FAA-approved LAANC provider before you arrive at the site; the FAA keeps the current list at faa.gov/uas/getting_started/laanc.

5. What are current weather conditions?

Part 107 requires minimum 3 statute miles visibility and 500 feet vertical clearance below clouds. Wind limits are not regulatory minimums under Part 107 (except in extreme cases), but your aircraft manufacturer has rated wind limits that you should not exceed.

When the Answer Is "No"

A check that returns a restricted zone or active TFR is not a failure -- it is the check doing its job. Knowing before you drive to a location is exactly the point.

When a location is restricted, the check tells you:

  • What type of restriction applies -- national park, stadium, military, permit-required zone, or something else
  • Who the managing authority is -- the agency or organization that controls access
  • What the specific rule is -- whether it is a hard prohibition, a permit requirement, or a contact-before-flying situation

The check does not make the go/no-go decision. The pilot in command is always responsible for that judgment. The check gives you the information you need to make it correctly.


What Changes with Airspace

Class G (uncontrolled): No authorization needed under Part 107. Standard operating limitations apply: 400 ft AGL maximum, 100 mph speed limit, 3 SM visibility, 500 ft below clouds. Restricted zones in Class G still apply -- airspace class does not override ground-level restrictions.

Class D (controlled -- small tower airports): LAANC authorization or FAA DroneZone waiver required. LAANC is typically available with instant authorization through certified apps. The Class D surface area typically extends 4 NM from the airport; verify your exact coordinates against the UAS Facility Map.

Class C (controlled -- regional airports): Same authorization requirement as Class D; the radius is larger (typically 5 NM core, 10 NM outer) and the altitude ceilings at different points within the ring vary significantly. Get LAANC authorization for your specific coordinates.

Class B (controlled -- major airports): Strictest authorization environment. LAANC ceiling at many inner-ring locations is 0 feet, meaning no UAS operations are authorized even with LAANC. The UAS Facility Map shows exact ceilings by cell.

No-fly status (TFR or prohibited zone): A hard no-fly status means the flight cannot be conducted legally regardless of other factors. Flying into a TFR is a federal violation with serious consequences. Wait for the TFR to expire or choose a different site.


Check the Day of Your Flight

Conditions change. An airspace check run three days before a shoot does not account for a TFR that activates on flight day. A check run the previous evening may miss weather that developed overnight.

The correct practice: run your preflight check on the day of the flight, as close to launch time as practical. For commercial jobs, many pilots run one check during planning to confirm the site is viable, and a second check the morning of or en route to confirm no new restrictions have appeared.
